William Thomas Betts was born in 1898 in Ingham (Thingoe Q1-1898 4A:821), son of Robert William and Isabella Jane BETTS (née KING).
1901 census...Aged 3, he was at Neville Farm Cottages, Ingham with his father Robert W BETTS [34] shepherd born Whenhaston; his mother Isabella [31] born Leiston; sister Violet [7] and brother Christopher [5] both born Aldringham; brother Herbert H [9 months] born Ingham. 1911 census...Aged 13, farm labourer, he was at Nevill Farm Cottages, Ingham with his parents; brothers Christopher (shepherd's page) and Kitchener [10) (Herbert ?); sisters Florence [7] and Eleanor [5] both born Ingham. One sibling had died. The pension card (1919) has his mother at Neville Cottage, Ingham but later has father at School Lane, Fornham St Martin. |
He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
He was one of just two of his battery killed that day. So far not located their whereabouts at the time.
